Pierre Brisbois - birth certificate, Steinfort - 1844

The earliest I've traced the Brisbois lineage (so far) is to Mathieu (or Matthias) Brisbois of the town of Clemency in southwestern Luxembourg. He was born around 1795 and moved north to the town of Hagen, LUX where he married and raised his family. A map showing the town of Clemency, LUX lying to the southwest of Steinfort and Hagen. Luxembourg City lies just off the right-hand edge of the map.

Another map showing the towns of Hagen and Steinfort, Luxembourg. It takes about 20-30 minutes to walk between the center of the two towns. The border of Belgium lies on the western end of Steinfort. Pierre (Peter) Brisbois was born in the town of Hagen in 1844 and emigrated to the US in 1866.

More Irish or German family...

The Zimmerman branch of the family originated in the Moselle River (also spelled Mosel) valley near the western border of Germany, very close to the border with Luxembourg. Over the generations the family has lived in Eft, Hellendorf, Nittel, Orscholz and Trier. There are still Zimmerman's living in Nittel today. Anna Zimmerman moved from Trier to the USA where she settled in Eau Claire, WI and married Pierre (Peter) Brisbois.

Finally, a map of the country of Luxembourg. You should be able to locate Steinfort on the western border (left side) about 1/4 of the way up. Trier and the Moselle River valley lie to the east (about 1/3 of the way up on the right). Nittel, Germany is located (roughly) between Grevenmacher and Saarburg.

Nicholas M. "Briz" Brisbois with his niece, Mary McDonald (van der Meulen) and her parents, Ranald McDonald [brother-in-law] and Anne (Brisbois) McDonald [sister], and wife Winifred "Winnie" (Duignan) Brisbois in Stockton, CA, Sept. 1928. Briz and Winnie were married September 15, 1928. Anne and Ranald came out for the wedding and brought their youngest child, 12 year-old Mary, along for the trip.
