Letters from Soren and Christine Jensen to their son Charles Victor Jensen

(Charles Victor Jensen was born March 29, 1879 in San Francisco, CA; died August 17, 1961).

Oct. 18th 1930

Dear Charlie

Thanks for your letter and it surely was news to us for we had not heard anything about it before at least we don't remember anything about it. Well here is congratulation that you may have an pleasant + enjoyable trip and a safe return, yes Charlie it is an opportunity you cannot very well refuse to accept, it is also an honor bestowed on the oldest member of the agency which you are now. Too bad Ethel can't go for it surely will be a sight worth seeing all the great citys [sic] of Europe and the country as well and experiance [sic] as such you can and will all ways [sic] look back to with pleasure and satisfaction of having taken.

Of course we hope and expect you will have a safe return, most likely you will have some rough and stormy weather crosing [sic] the ocean this time of the year so you may be sea sick but the Doctor onboard most likely can help along to overcome that so you will not be bothered very much. I wasn't sick, but I understand your mother was sick the whole time but then conditions are deferent [sic] now.

We are all glad Jennie is much better - she has taken a trust deed loan for 7000.00 on a very nice home at Carthay Center near Wilshire Blvd. and yesterday I borrowed 1000.00 the last money she had and will pay her 7% (I also took a loan and was short that amount) as well as the 7000.00 so now she has 8000.00 out at 7%.

Yes Charlie your mother and I would like very much for you to take a trip over to Denmark.

The people in London I am sure can tell you all about the way to go, the most direct way would be to go by ship accross [sic] the North Sea over to Esbjerg on west coast of Denmark that's the nearest and the main shipping point between England + Denmark.

My Birthplace was a farm called Frokjier Guldager sogn (Parish) Esbjerg is the nearest city to my home the Harbor was built in 1871 my Brother Christen build [sic] the first house in Esbjerg at that time, and their first child was born there and named after the Harbor and the Engineer but since dead as was also his father. I left to come over here in April 1872.

The North Sea is very rough and stormy this time of the year but if you are going over to Esbjerg that way I think it is better to go from Esbjerg to England as if I remember the wind would be against you and it is always rougher bucking the wind, but you could go over land except crossing the English Channel over to France and then on to Germany + Denmark by train. I think there may be a direct line to Esbjerg if not you can connect with the main line between Esbjerg + Copenhagen (Kjšbenhavn) Esbjerg is called the Chicago of Denmark on account of its fast groth [sic]. My oldest Brother Hans Jensen Frokjier whos [sic] 2 sons, your cossens [sic], have a large Paper Manufacturing Plant in Esbjerg and I guess very likely they would be able to speak English more or less as they must be having dealing with England constantly in business connection. I heard they employ some 75 people. I have heard they use their home name Frokjier rather than Jensen on acct. of there being so many Jensen's, so in either case you may find them through the telephone or ells [sic] the Hotel people would be sure to know all about them and the most likely would be doing business with them.

But I have a friend there all though [sic] unknown to me in person but through articles he writes in "Evangelisk Tidende" which I enjoy reading very much his name is Eiler Sorensen. Rev. Eiler Sorensen Pastor of the Methodist Church in Esbjerg and I think from an occational [sic] word in English he must be able to speak English and I am sure he will be glad to see you and will help you find your 2 cossens [sic] place of business etc. and any other information that that might be of interest to you. There are a lot of cossens [sic] over there but dont [sic] bother about that though some of them may be living there.

Pastor Sorensen and your cossens [sic] can tell you all about Copenhagen.

From Esbjerg you cross the contry [sic] to Copenhagen the city where your mother was raised (there) but of course there is none she can refers to only the First Methodist Church (now called the Central Mission I think) that was Established and Build [sic] in Copenhagen (and in Denmark as well.) She went to that Sunday School + Church her mother Mrs. Lyngby was member there, the minister was then Pastor Willirup any Methodist minister will know all about that church. Your mother was born in Slagelse but moved to Copenhagen soon after and lived there till they came over here to Brooklyn N.Y. 1872.

Now Charlie we think it would be well to cut out the trip accross [sic] the North Sea for that is very rough and stormy in the Fall of the year and rather take a trip up from Berlin to Copenhagen by train and if you dont [sic] get to Esbjerg it will be all right [sic] with me. And then go back the same way again rather than going over the North Sea, as I suppose you would have to go back to England again on your way home.

The Westphal's and Jennie are leaving here Friday and will be in Oakland Saturday late in the afternoon the Westphals will stay at his Brothers place Will. Westphal. They will call you up on the phone maybe Sunday morn, Jennie I think is going to stay at the Davidson's.

Jennie is bringing a Book with Views of Copenhagen.

We would like it if when you come back you could come this way so we could have a chance to see you, if you wouldn't have time to stop over we could run down to meet the train and at least say Hellow [sic] and welcome bock [sic].

Kindly send us a card from the deferent [sic] places you visit and remember us kindly to all our relatives + friends over there.

With much love to Ethel and the Girl, and your dear self.
And the sinsere [sic] wish for a pleasant trip and a safe return home of our dear son Charles.
From Mother + Father.

Beverly Hills - Monday evening

Dear Charlie recieved your letter to day [sic] but as Jennie has been out all day will not be able to send it to night [sic] but will to morow [sic]. I found your Birth Certificate its so dried up so its going to pieces so you better glue it in a Shab (?) book if you have one and the paper (?) you send will have Jennie and Edna sign as witneses [sic] so I hope it will be allright [sic].

Well Jennie just came in now she and Wertes (?) had been to Lucas for dinner she brought me some nice cakes from ther [sic]. Well we have had some small quake [sic] mostly at night but it looks bad over in Long Bech [sic].

Now dear Charlie dont [sic] forget its Holy Week so read in the little Book I gave you or in the Bible read about how Christ died on the Cros [sic] on Calvary and gave his Life for a ransom for us that we might Live and have Eternal Life may God Bles [sic] you and keep you is my Prayer. With to youself [sic] and Ethel.

from Mother.

Beverly Hills - Thursday

Dear Charlie and Ethel

First I want to thank you both for your letters and good wishes for my Birthday, and allso [sic] for the Beautiful Clock. I like it very much, on my Birthday Edna gave a nice Luncheon and had a lovely Cake with 77 made with green Candles. Wished you could have been with us, was very much surprised about Bettys [sic] Engagement as we never had an inkling about it before. Well I hope she picked the right man I am ancious [sic] to hear more about him and when the Wedding will be coming off. Well another year has passed and we are growing old, so it behoves [sic] us to prepare for the next World as we shal [sic] all give an account of our lives and as the Bible says all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God, then we all need a Redemer [sic]. But God so loved the World that he gave his only begotten Son that Whosoever beliveth [sic] on [sic] him should not perish but have everlasting Life. So you se [sic] God has done all for us and we only have to belive [sic] in the work of Christ on Calvarys [sic] Cross when he said it is finished.

(A)nd now Charlie dear I want to congratulate you on your Birthday and hope it will be a happy one and you will have many more of them truly my prayer is that Gods Blessing may Rest on you and your Family and let us be thankful for all his Blessings to us all.

With lots of Love to the Girls and Ethel and to yourself from
Mother.
